    Phyllostachys iridescens is a large, timber bamboo, with excellent quality wood, and an upright stature.  It is one of the fastest to reach timber size, and some of the culms have attractive orange and burgundy stripes on them.  When left in a large pot, it can make an excellent portable hedge.

    Makinoi was named after botanist Tomitaro Makinoi (1862-1957). It is a huge upright timber bamboo that produces excellent wood. the shoots come up with a blueish powder coating the newly exposed culms. Used throughout asia for constructing furnature and a variety of crafts.

    Like congesta and heteroclada this bamboo has small air canals inside the rhizomes making it tolerant of wet soil. The almost solid green canes are very erect, of good quality and usually have flared nodes. The new shoots are edible and free of acrid taste and the cane sheaths are an olive-green with stripes of white and wine.

    The culms come up green and slowly turn a shiny black after about 18 months to two years. Phyllostachys nigra loves full sun and is more drought tolerant than many other bamboos. Like many subspecies of nigra, it grows well indoors.

    Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory' is a timber form of nigra that deserves wide recognition. It produces some of the best quality wood of any bamboo that can be grown in Canada.  A common name for this bamboo is Snakeskin, because of the way that the culms are marked.  Although a nigra the culms are not pure black, but instead develop spots or patches of dark color. When the culms are cut and seasoned, the green sections turn a straw color, and the spots show cloud-like shades of brown and ebony. The result is an excellent quality bamboo pole, that has coloring that looks like snakeskin. In Japan this bamboo is used in Tea Houses, for high quality, specialty finish work.  This bamboo makes a great tall screen, and the exceptional quality poles, are a bonus.

    This clone from California is said to grow larger and turn black quicker than regular nigra but we have noticed no difference between this clone and Phyllostachys nigra so far. Phyllostachys nigra loves full sun and is more drought tolerant than many other bamboos.

    Hale is a rare form of Black Bamboo that is said to be hardier and shorter then regular black but we have noticed no difference here at Bamboo World. The culms are said to turn jet black quicker than regular nigra. Phyllostachy nigra 'Henon' has surprised us with how hardy it has shown to be after withstanding -28C with the windchill almost unscathed here at Bamboo World.

    Phyllostachys nigra 'Megurochiku' is very similar to nigra 'Henon' in appearance and growth characteristics; like many nigras, megurochiku is drought resistant and quite hardy. Megurochiku develops black stripes on the sulcis groove.
